Learning to Listen

This is a Wave 2 intervention for small group delivery. However, the same programme can be delivered for an individual child requiring more intensive support at Wave 3.

Age/phase: Reception and Year 1

Suitable for: A group of up to 6 children who need support to develop their attention and listening skills. 

Cost: Pay as you go: £375 per group/ £350 for an individual child or within contract equivalent: 1 day of your contracted time

Start dates: any day during the week commencing 18th May, 1st June, 8th June, 15th June.

This is a 5 session programme.

Outcomes

This Wave 2 programme provides a framework for teaching and reinforcing positive listening skills in young children.

Children will develop better attention, focus, co-operation and engagement

Teaching assistants will develop greater confidence, knowledge and skills in modeling positive listening skills

Teachers will be able to build on the skills taught within the small group sessions

Description:

An interactive group intervention using short activities to build listening and attention skills. Using kinaesthetic, visual and auditory approaches children are encouraged to apply their listening techniques to learning situations presented. The skill of listening is broken down into four key area throughout the programme; good sitting, good looking, good taking turns and good thinking. The programme is supervised by a Senior Educational Psychologist

Programme includes:

A pre-meeting with key staff to discuss the children who will take part 

5 facilitated group sessions delivered on site by an Assistant Psychologist

Liaison with a key adult who can sustain/roll out the intervention

Postcards for parents to provide activities for home support

A brief summary report

A booklet containing a sample session outline and a bank of suitable follow up activities
